Placement Anaesthetics

Main Duties of Placement

Post is split between anaesthesia and preoperative medicine

Pre- and post-operative review of patients (adults and children) undergoing surgery. Management of patients in recovery and for discharge. Review and optimisation of inpatients prior to surgery. Acute pain team ward rounds Anaesthesia sessions will be allocated to elective and emergency theatre sessional work.

Ward reviews and rounds with consultant lead perioperative medicine team.

You will provide out of hours on call commitments to the trauma department and the Hospital at Night (HAN) rota which covers ENT, General Surgery and Orthopaedics with the support of specialist registrars.

Typical Work Pattern

Split between short days (8-5) in either anaesthesia, preoperative medicine or ICU.

12-hour Hospital at Night shifts HAN: 1 week in total split into 3 nights and 4 nights.

Learning Opportunities

Supervised anaesthetic sessions gaining exposure to vascular access, airway management, intensive care and regional anaesthesia.

Attendance at high risk obstetric and preoperative shared decision-making clinics including cardiopulmonary exercise testing sessions.

Adult and paediatric anaesthesia.

Remote anaesthesia (MRI, ECT)

Pain management (acute and chronic)

Opportunity for involvement in research and audit.

Experience in the initial assessment, resuscitation and ongoing management of patients acutely admitted to the ENT, General Surgery and Trauma and Orthopaedic units. (Including attendance at Trauma Unit Meeting.)

Teaching

Weekly anaesthetic and ICU trainee teaching.

Weekly departmental teaching.

Weekly ICU MDT, M&M and teaching.
