Our Practice

We are based in modern purpose-built premises in Helensburgh - a beautiful and prosperous town on the Clyde Estuary with excellent transport links by road and rail with Glasgow. We have been a training practice for over thirty years and we have six partners, three of us GP trainers in the Practice. We care for around 8,000 patients often looking after generations of families, in addition to nursing homes and naval families linked to Faslane Naval base.

We are firmly patient-centred and consistently achieve highly in the Quality Outcomes Framework. We have invested in upgrading our premises to provide a pleasant working environment for the whole practice team.

Our trainers have a rich wealth of experience among them. Dr Stark trained in Cardiology prior to working as a GP, and specialises in Diabetes. Dr Dunn who is a local Training Programme Director for GP Specialty Training also works as an ALS Instructor and is Lead Clinician for Integrated Care GPs working in the local Vale of Leven Hospital. He is also an occasional GP contributor on BBC Radio Scotland, and writes for the Community Magazine. Dr Mclachlan has been an Associate Adviser for NES for many years and works for Highland Health Board as Locality Clinical Director.

We benefit from having four Practice Nurses, two of whom are independent prescribers, and a Health Care Assistant. We are constantly striving to improve our service through the Productive General Practice programme, and have regular team-building days that involve the entire staff group.

Educational Opportunities

As the Practice has always had a strong training ethos, there will always be clinical and non-clinical staff on hand who can provide help and support, and we expect registrars to be inquisitive!

We reduce our clinics most Tuesday mornings to hold multidisciplinary meetings involving a weekly clinical 'hot topic' and educational presentations to support team group learning. You will be encouraged to play an active role in these valuable sessions. This meeting provides opportunities to engage with other local health professionals such as District Nursing, Mental Health Team, Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy.

Protected learning sessions include:

  • Protected study session available each week which allows you to study privately orarrange additional clinical experience at local clinics.
  • One-to-one protected tutorial session with your Educational Supervisor or one of the other trainers in the Practice every week.
  • Full day attendance at Registrar group every two weeks at Luss in the Lodge on the Loch. You will join fellow registrars from Alexandria and Dumbarton practices to enjoy a blend of facilitated sessions by trainers with registrar-led topics directed by the group, ethical discussions and clinical role-play.
