Type of Practice

This is a rural practice within easy reach of the M8 motorway, and Glasgow is just 20 minutes away. There are two surgeries - one in Houston and one in Bridge of Weir - with a total of nine consulting rooms and two treatment rooms. We are a teaching practice, having both undergraduate as well as FY2 and GP trainee doctors attached.

List Size

We have a list size of around 10,250.

Number of Partners

There are currently six partners and two practice nurses. There is the usual complement of support staff under the supervision of our practice manager Anne Findlay. In addition, there are attached healthcare workers such as district nurses, health visitors, midwives and a phlebotomist.

Dr Smith works 7 sessions and is responsible for coil insertions.

Dr Storey works 9 sessions and is the Cluster Quality Lead for one of the local clusters. He is also on the GP Sub-Committee of the Glasgow LMC.

Dr Fisher works 9 sessions and is the second Trainer. She is on the board of St Vincent's Hospice.

Dr Parkhill works 8 sessions. He is responsible for supervising the FY2 doctors.

Dr Thomson works 9 sessions. He is responsible for supervising the undergraduate students.

Interesting Features

The practice covers Quarriers Village where there are several residential care homes for the elderly and people with physical and learning difficulties. We have developed a close working relationship with our local hospices and regularly hold multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care. We are keen to provide our own out-of-hours care for our terminal patients if possible and we use an integrated pathway to ensure the best possible care in a patient's last days.

Health visitors, midwives and Doing Well By staff all hold regular clinics in our surgeries.

Educational Opportunities

Our junior doctors are encouraged to attend the local day release courses for West Renfrewshire. We are happy to arrange other opportunities such as family planning, hospice or secondary care sessions.

Advantages/Opportunities of Working in the Practice

We like to think that we are a friendly practice who show close team working but understand and utilise each others' strengths and weaknesses to continue to provide a general practice service that upholds the ethos of the GP being the patient advocate as well as their coordinator of care.
