Trainers

  • Melanie Sloan
  • Brian Scott
  • Craig McColl

Type of practice:

The Greenlaw Practice is one of 3 practices in Northcroft Medical Centre, Paisley. It serves the whole of Paisley as well as Renfrew and parts of Barrhead. This means our practice population is diverse with a broad mix of ages and socio-economic groups. Our practice team is friendly and enthusiastic. We have five GP partners and one Retainer who work alongside our GP trainees. We also have two Practice Nurses and a Health Care Assistant as well as a supportive team of admin staff led by our Practice Manager. Attached to the practice we have the services of Health Visitors, District Nurses, Midwives, a practice Pharmacist and also Counsellors who see patients at the practice.

List size:

We have over 6300 patients.

GPs:

There are 5 partners at Greenlaw - Dr Kate Slaven, Dr Brian Scott and Dr Melanie Sloan are all GP Trainers. Dr Melanie Somerville and Dr Craig McColl are both involved in medical student teaching and also play a role in the supervision and teaching of the GPSTs attached to the practice.

Dr Slaven is also a GP Appraiser and Dr Scott is a CSA Examiner for nMRCGP.

Dr Rich Earl has recently joined the practice as a Retainer working 2 days a week.

Interesting features of the practice:

In addition to regular medical services the practice also offers patients additional services including Methadone prescribing, Minor Surgery and Contraceptive Implant fitting.

We have a weekly MDT meeting attended by the District Nurses and Health Visitors for all clinical staff. In addition to this we have a monthly Gold Standards meeting with our link Palliative Care Nurse from the local hospice and we also have a monthly meeting where the full practice team get together to discuss any issues.

We use our PLT sessions to cover current topics and training needs as well as for team building activities.

Educational opportunities:

Greenlaw is a long established training practice which now has 3 GP Trainers. We also have medical student attachments and are in the process of arranging nursing student attachments also. There is therefore a well established ethos of teaching, support and education within the practice. As well as the GP Partners the Practice Manager and nursing staff are involved in tutorials and training.

GPSTs are timetabled with 3 sessions of protected learning time each week and are encouraged to use this time to work on their ePortfolio, attend tutorials and complete their workplace based assessments. This is also time that can be used to experience other forms of care in the community for instance hospice attachments and pharmacy visits as well as attending the Deanery Half Day Release educational sessions.

Advantages/opportunities of working in this practice:

As mentioned already training is very much to the fore of what Greenlaw does and how the practice operates. We enjoy the variation that working with trainees provides and find this a rewarding part of our job. Our registrars are well supported with protected time to fulfil the requirements of their ePortfolio and more formal aspects of their training. There is an established induction programme on arrival and to begin with appointment times are longer. You will be encouraged to participate in Audit, Significant Event Analysis and to get involved with any other topical issues within the practice. You will very much be made to feel part of our team whilst you are here and we expect our trainees to make the most of the opportunities presented to them and get involved as much as possible.
