Type of practice

The Barony Practice is housed in modern premises in the centre of Paisley. The practice covers all of Paisley and Elderslie and has a mixed demographic ranging from very deprived to affluent patients.  This affords the GPST a wide experience of all aspects of primary care.

We are positioned close to the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

There are five partners and we are all accredited trainers, apartb  from our new partner who intends to go on the training course when she is eligible. We teach final year medical students from Glasgow and Dundee Universities.

We are a welcoming practice, very committed to teaching and we take training seriously. We also believe that life is for enjoying and do our best to ensure the GPSTs have a fun, social time while in the practice.

We have 2 practice nurses and a well appreciated team of receptionists led by our very helpful practice manager, Bernadette Arthur. There is a large team of professionals attached to the practice including District Nurses, Health Visitors, CBT specialists, midwives, addiction worker and pharmacists.

We are also an innovative practice. We take part in research, were the first practice in the UK to have a benefits advisor in the practice and were the first practice in Scotland to use Patient Opinion www.patientopinion.org.uk. We are currently a 17C practice and are leading on reforming the NHS locally via the Renfrewshire Development Programme.

We believe in the importance of enjoying life and work.  We laugh in the face of increasing adversity.

GPs

Four partners in the Barony Practice are trainers. We all attend trainer meetings and take an active part in training in the practice and are involved in facilitating the GPST1 and GPST3 day release programmes. All five partners are very interested in teaching and we all are involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Dr Johnstone is an Associate Adviser at NES for Clinical Governance, Audit and SEAs and an Associate Clinical Director for Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership. He is lead GP for the Clinical Services Review, Renfrewsire Development Programme.

Dr Hislop attends the GPST selection process in Stirling.

Dr Hallam is responsible for Final Year medical students.

Dr Corfield is responsible for Retaining in the practice, she attends the GPST selection process in Stirling and sits on the local prescribing group.

Educational opportunities

The Barony Practice offers many educational opportunities. We provide many additional services including methadone prescribing, contraceptive implants, prescribing initiatives, patient safety research and innovative projects are available for the interested GPST. We are very open-minded and have helped GPSTs over the years in areas in which they have a specific interest. Annually we have 6-8 sessions of protected learning time in the practice for the whole team to learn together.

Advantages/opportunities of working in our practice

We value the intangible support the doctors provide for each other and we all meet in the coffee room every day before and after morning surgery for coffee, chat and cathartic debriefing as required.

The Barony practice takes training seriously, but also believes in having fun. We can respond to your needs and take you as far as you want to go and a little bit further.
