  • The practice was presented with a Good Practice Award in 2017 in recognition of Excellence in Education and Training from NHS Education Scotland.

List Size

Office Manager

  • Gillian Jamieson

Location

  • The main surgery is in Shawlands about 3 miles south of the city centre.   It is just off the main Kilmarnock Road and convenient for shops and public transport.  The branch surgery is in Clarkston Road just on the boundary of  Cathcart /Muirend.

Population served

  • The practice covers a wide area geographically including inner city and suburban areas.  As a result there is a mixed population generally weighted towards the higher social classes and the elderly but also a number of asylum seekers.

Premises

  • Grantley Medical Practice is a ground floor tenement building and has been in operation since before the NHS.   There used to be a live-in caretaker and one consulting room.   In 1994 the premises were improved and a new reception area and a treatment room were developed.  In 2004 the flat next door was bought and the premises were extended and modernised.   There are now 5 consulting/treatment rooms and a separate staff area.

Practice Philosophy

  • We strive to provide high quality patient centred care and work closely with all members of the primary care team.  We have regular partner meetings and there are monthly staff meetings.  We offer a friendly and supportive training environment and are a very approachable team.  We rarely see pharmaceutical representatives.

Practice Staff

  • 1 office manager
  • 4 reception/admin staff
  • 2 practice nurses

Attached Staff

  • 2 health visitor
  • 1 support health visitor
  • 2 district nurses

Trainee

  • For 6 months of the year there is an ST1 and an ST3 training with us.  The ST3 usually has the same room which is shared with others at different times.  The week is made up of booked appointment sessions, house calls on most days and some triage appointments.  There are regular protected educational sessions and 1 half day for personal study.
  • We try to do a debriefing after each surgery and make to time for informal teaching at all opportunities.
  • Joint surgeries and videoing start early on. Although it sounds daunting, it is a great training tool.
  • There is also protected time for weekly tutorials.
  • There is a monthly day release for both ST1's and ST3's for the South East training group.
  • All the partners, manager and nurses will take part in training.

Overview

  • We are a small, warm and friendly team.
  • Most of us actually enjoy what we do and how we do it.
  • We have regular clinical team and practice meetings and usually communicate effectively.
  • We arrange regular, if infrequent, social events.
  • We are welcoming and try to make new trainees feel part of the team.
  • We aim to be sensitive and flexible with regard to trainees' needs.
  • Our greatest strength is our patients who are usually pleasant and often very appreciative of what we do.
