Type of Practice

The practice is an inner city deep end practice- meaning it has a high level of deprivation. The practice caters for a diverse and multicultural community. One third of the population do not have English as their first language and we consult on a regular basis through interpreters. The practice is based in a health centre with two other practices. Other services within the health centre include community dentist, physiotherapy, treatment room and various outreach clinics. The practice provides trainees with the opportunity to encounter patients who are from various ethnic backgrounds as well as patients with significant social and medical problems. The practice team are enthusiastic, friendly and welcoming and we are heavily involved in teaching. As well as hosting GP trainees we also host foundation year doctors and medical students

List Size:

Any interesting features of the practice:

  • The practice has been based in the Gorbals/ Govanhill area for almost 100 years.
  • Our varied population base results in many unusual and challenging clinical problems which push GPs and registrars to continuously update their medical knowledge
  • Teambuilding is important to us as it helps with staff morale. As well as nights-out we arrange annual practice trips to different venues for a weekend- destinations in recent years include Paris, Edinburgh and Pitlochry. The registrar who has been attached to the practice also attends these trips.

Educational Opportunities

  • We have been a training practice since 2004 and have GP trainees at every year of their training which is helpful for new trainees as it allows them to chat to more experienced trainees.
  • We have medical students constantly rotating through the practice – we facilitate 3rd, 4th and 5th year Glasgow University medical students and GP trainees are involved in teaching the students on a regular basis
  • We actively encourage our GP trainees to develop their own individual educational plan and support attendance at appropriate study days

Advantages/opportunities of working in your practice

  • The main advantage of working in our practice is the variety and scope of problems you will encounter on a daily basis. Your clinical knowledge is constantly challenged in Govanhill
  • We encourage future registrars to share their strengths and experiences with our practice team as we feel that the learning experience works both ways.
  • We are a friendly practice and trainees are extremely positive about the training experience we provide. We have had doctors who have been placed with us during their foundation years return as GP trainees as a result of their previous positive experiences in the practice.
