Number of partners and outside interests

The practice has 3 GP partners. Dr Jo Ratter (trainer) has worked at the practice for 15 years as a trainee, retainer and then partner. She has particular interest in children and women’s health and works regularly in the Out of Hours service. Dr Alan McLaughlin (trainer) has worked at the practice for 9 years, initially as a trainee, then locum and now partner. He has a special interest in diabetes and also provides medical support to Greenock Morton FC.  Dr Kyle MacPhee trained in another practice in the Health Centre and spent some time as a locum with the Green Practice before replacing a retiring partner in 2019.

Any interesting features of the practice

The practice is based within Govan Health centre, alongside three other training practices.   This is of considerable advantage to prospective trainees allowing informal, regular contact with other GP trainees.

Working in a “Deep End” practice develops unique understanding and insight into the health impacts of poverty and deprivation.  Trainees will gain experience in managing complex co-morbidities, drug and alcohol problems, child safeguarding and mental health issues arising from socio-economic deprivation.

The practice has a Community Links Worker embedded within the team, who is expert in understanding the local resources available, and works in partnership with clinicians to provide anholistic response to patient needs. The practice also has close links with the “Community Addiction Team” (CAT) and supports an Opiate Replacement Service, with an attached CAT worker.

Sister Umeed, our practice nurse and ANP, is an expert in travel medicine, leading teaching and training in this area out-with the practice. She also has expertise in chronic disease management, (respiratory care in particular), and is an excellent source of knowledge and teaching.

The practice has ready access to acute and secondary care from the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, located 1km away. The practice has open access to many of the diagnostic services provided by this hospital.

Educational opportunities

There are high levels of disease morbidity, frequently multi-morbidity, in the practice population allowing plentiful opportunity to gain experience in clinical investigation, diagnosis and management.  The nature of presentations and context of deprivation make a holistic approach to care essential, and trainees are supported in gaining this experience

The practice is very well established in training and all trainees have successfully completed the MRCGP examinations, including the recent introduction of the RCA.

Trainees participate in the Southwest Glasgow half day/full day release educational programme attended by all trainees in the area.

Advantages/opportunities of working in your practice

The educational opportunities, referred to above in terms of experience, are considerable.  The practice also has monthly MDT meetings which are an excellent educational opportunity as are the separate monthly PBSGL sessions.  PBSGL provides a great forum for discussion and learning and the cost of the course materials are covered by the practice.  The practice is located beside the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, just at the south exit of the Clyde Tunnel. The practice location has been a strong additional incentive for trainee recruitment over the years because the practice is readily accessible from attractive residential accommodation in the West end of Glasgow which is a 10 minute car journey away, normally against the flow of rush hour traffic, and is also close to the residential areas of the South Side of Glasgow.
