Any interesting features of the practice

  • All 4 partners have previously been trainees in this practice.
  • We are based in a health centre with 3 other practices, all of whom are training practices.  The practice lies less than 10 minutes drive from the West End, less than 15 minutes from Shawlands, 5 minutes from M8 and 10 minutes from M77. There are lots of places within a short distance to get lunch!  Govan is now considered an area of high deprivation (we are a Deep End practice) having previously been a prosperous area during the successful ship building years.  We also cover areas within Cardonald, Pollok, Renfrew and several care homes.
  • We have an excellent practice team. We presently have an outstanding practice nurse, a practice manager, a secretary and 3 receptionists.  Attached to our practice we have our Practice Pharmacist, district nurses, a health visitor, an addictions worker who visits once a week and a Community Links Practitioner who will work alongside us to help patients with complex problems to set and achieve goals and link them into local community based services. We meet as a team once a week to discuss any relevant issues (clinical and non clinical) and our trainee is expected to attend and participate in these meetings as this is protected time.

Educational opportunities

  • In addition to learning how to be a good GP, trainees will gain a lot of experience in how deprivation affects people's physical and mental health and hands on experience of some of the challenges of providing primary health care in such an area.  They will see a great deal of pathology during their time with us.  Trainees will gain experience in dealing with patients with addiction problems (drug and alcohol).  We look after a local nursing home and our trainee will accompany one of the partners during their weekly visit to experience the complexities of elderly care.  Initially trainees will begin their placement by spending time observing each member of our team to experience how we all work.  Trainees will initially begin seeing patients under direct supervision of a partner before beginning to consult in tandem with a partner for the remainder of their time in our practice.  Trainees will also carry out home visits on a regular basis allowing them to see first hand some of the difficulties our patients experience in their own environment.

Advantages/opportunities of working in your practice

We are a friendly, close knit, very patient centered and learner centered practice.  All 4 partners are involved in supporting and supervising our trainees and during ST3 trainees will have their own room.  We strive to provide the best health care for our patients and a supportive educational environment for our trainees. We have an excellent primary health care team and our trainees are fully included in this during their time with us.
