Number of GPs and outside interests

  • There are 8 partners, of whom 4 are full-time and 4 part-time. Five of the doctors work mainly at Westfield Health Centre – Drs. Stephanie Campbell, Brian Milmore and Adrian Petre work at Govan Health Centre.  Current GP Registrars work between the 2 sites.
  • Dr Niall Smith is a Vocational Studies Tutor (1st Year Medicine) at Glasgow University for 1 session per week. Dr. Milmore is a practice representative on the local cluster. The practice is also involved in Undergraduate Medical Student Teaching - Final Years overseen by Drs. Fairman and Petre.

Any interesting features of the practice

  • The practice is based in two sites: Govan Health Centre with a list size of approximately 4000 and Westfield Health Centre in Cardonald with approximately 5000 patients. The practice population is fairly mixed, with representation from the entire range of social groups. The practice prevalence for chronic diseases is higher than the national average and the practice is involved in the Deep End project looking at the 100 practices in Scotland with the greatest levels of deprivation.
  • Our practice team currently comprises two skilled and experienced practice nurses who carry out most of the chronic disease reviews, and a strong team of receptionists and administrative staff. We also have the support of two Pharmacists, a Physiotherapist and  a LINKS worker embedded in the practice, district nurses and health visitors attached to the practice, as well as regular input from dieticians, drugs counsellors etc.

Educational opportunities

  • As well as the valuable clinical experience gained from working within a busy urban setting with high levels of deprivation the Registrar will have the opportunity to be involved in the achievement of practice targets, enhanced services and other targets and to learn about what is involved in successfully managing a practice. The practice runs a methadone clinic in conjunction with counsellors from the South West Addiction Service and the Registrar will gain experience in this area. There will also be an opportunity to be involved in the often very complex care of asylum seekers.
  • In addition to tutorials, the Registrar will participate in our regular multi-disciplinary educational sessions, either in-house or with a visiting speaker, and will have the opportunity to attend our regular Practice meetings. Trainees are also expected to take part in the South West Glasgow half day release educational programme. Govan Health Centre houses four GP practices, a dental practice and treatment rooms and is adjacent to Elderpark Clinic providing a base for community services, including our district nurses. Over the years, the GP practices have developed great relationships and share a library and tearoom space on the first floor. There are daily coffee mornings providing opportunities to share information and support. Because there are four training practices all within Govan Health Centre, the Registrar will also benefit from having a strong peer group on site.

Advantages/opportunities of working in your practice

  • As a team, we are strongly committed to providing excellent training opportunities for our Registrars.
  • The Practice is close to the M8 and the Clyde Tunnel allowing easy access from most areas in and around the city and south side.
