Practice Information

Kirkview Medical Practice in East Kilbride is a friendly and supportive team. We pride ourselves on providing a high quality service, tailored to meet the needs of our 7600 patients. The practice population demonstrates diversity in social background, age and health, which allows GP trainees to experience different aspects of clinical input in diverse circumstances. It is with this wide experienced gained within our supportive learning environment which gives trainees the skills and expertise to become confident and competent practitioners.

Our team currently consists of 4 GP Partners, 1 Salaried GP, 1 Practice Nurse, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 1 Health Care Assistant and 6 Administrative staff lead by our enthusiastic and experienced Practice Manager. The practice itself is housed in a modern building in the heart of East Kilbride, where you will have the benefit of working with neighbouring practices in the same building, as well as connections with members of the multi-disciplinary team in both health and social care. Additionally, Hairmyres Hospital is a five minute car journey away, a major teaching hospital, with excellent services offered. The location is within easy commuting distance of Glasgow and surrounding areas, with excellent transport links.

Our GP Educational Supervisors, Dr Monica Canning and Dr Doreen Watson, have a wealth of training experience amongst them. All clinicians and the Practice Manager are involved collectively with the GP training process and we work together as a team to utilise everyone’s interests and skill sets. We also work as part of a wider MDT with our District Nurses, MacMillan Nurses and Health Visitors by holding regular monthly meetings to discuss cases of interest, Child Protection and Palliative Care cases which would hugely benefit trainees. We also have a Clinical Pharmacist aligned with the practice and their expertise and skills are also very supportive for the GP trainee.

Kirkview Medical Practice was re-accredited as a training practice for the maximum 3 year period in January 2020, with exemplary feedback given from the visiting postgraduate team.

Education & Training

We have a structured induction programme for new GP trainees for the first four weeks. The GPST1 and GPST3 clinicians will receive regular tutorials with other clinicians and professionals aligned with the practice, as well as regular protected educational study time and time built in to the schedule for GPST Day Release programmes. Informative tutorials are available from all clinicians in the practice, and the Practice Manager when indicated as part of ongoing professional development. We support trainees in achieving workplace-based assessments and have facilities within the surgery to record surgeries as a means of improving consultation techniques and CSA skills. Our trainers will regularly review the learning needs of each trainee and tailor their education programme accordingly. This may include shadowing opportunities with our on-call GPs, house visits, care home visits, or working with other members of the practice and wider MDT, shadowing them in their roles. We welcome and encourage trainees to join us for lunch daily in our communal area where we have a chance to catch up and have the opportunity for informal case discussions and information sharing. We are proud to advise of our ‘open door’ policy in the practice where we encourage all team members to communicate throughout the day with each other for ongoing support and guidance. As a practice, we are also firm believers in keeping up to date with our own personal development. We hold business and practice meetings every six weeks, along with quarterly complaints and SEA meetings, which trainees are actively encouraged to attend and participate in.

If you are considering training with our practice, we would welcome the chance to show you around the surgery and to meet the team, as well as answer any questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact our Practice Manager, Megan Fitzpatrick on 01355 575630 or via email megan.fitzpatrick@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk .
