Training is at the core of our practice, having been established as a training practice since 1994.  4 of 5 current partners in the practice completed their GP training in the practice and all have a great appreciation of the benefit of a supportive training environment. The two trainers are Dr Craig Smith and Dr Laura Coventry, but the commitment to training runs right through the whole practice team.

There is a structured induction programme to introduce trainees to all of the staff and their roles and the workings of the practice.  Beyond induction there is a continued atmosphere of support and learning.

Regular tutorials are enjoyed by all trainees and all of the GP’s. We have a weekly practice business meeting attended by the GP’s, GPST’s and Practice Manager.  We have regular multidisciplinary Primary Care team meetings, but perhaps most importantly we have daily coffee or tea at 11am which allows all the doctors to get together to share queries, concerns and general conversation. This is an important time for all!

As a place to learn the art of General Practice Strathaven provides a great experience.

There is a mixed demograph and as semi-rural practice we look after a number of farming facilities. One of the real treasures of general practice is looking after families in general and Strathaven is a place we can do this.  There is a large settled population allowing us to form relationships with whole and extended families.  As GP’s we can be part of welcoming new members into families and providing end of life care within the same extended family. This can be a humbling experience.

Our patients are patient. They understand we are a training practice, and understand the great need for GP training at this time.
