What is Oriel?

Oriel is the UK-wide recruitment portal for eligible applicants applying for Foundation Training. Link to Oriel.

 

What is a 'Group'? 

The term ‘Group’ on Oriel is used to refer to a set of Foundation Programmes in a particular region of Scotland which provide Foundation Training. 

The 4 regions in Scotland are:

    • East – these groups begin with an E
    • North – these groups begin with an N  
    • South-East – these groups being with an S
    • West – these groups begin with a W

 

What is a 'Programme'? 

The term 'Programme' on Oriel is used to refer to an approved series of:

    • 6 x 4-month posts or
    • 3 x 4-month posts or
    • 3 x 8-month posts 

To make up to a two-year foundation training programme. 

 

What is a Unit of Application (UoA)?

Scotland is one Unit of Application (UoA).

There are 4 regions in Scotland - East, North, South-East, West

 

Can I update my details in my application form after I submit it?

No, once an application has been submitted, applicant are unable to withdraw or amend you application.

Applicants can only amend their personal contact details, referee details and UoA preferences once they have submitted their application.

Linked applicants cannot amend their UoA preferences after the application window has closed or their link will be broken. 

 

Am I allocated to a one or two-year programme? 

All applicants allocated to the Scottish Foundation School are allocated to a two-year programme.

For the Foundation Programme (FP)

    • Applicants allocated to the North and West are assigned to a fixed two-year programme (rotation)
    • Applicants allocated to the East or South-East will be assigned ether a fixed F1 programme (rotation) with allocation to F2 carried out part-way through the F1 year or a fixed two-year programme (rotation)

For Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP)

    • Applicants are allocated to a fixed two-year programme (rotation)

 

Can I do either my F1 or my F2 training abroad if I accept a place in the Scottish Foundation School? 

No, The Scottish Foundation School does not support applications for Foundation training abroad, in F1 or F2.

This is due to the requirement to quality manage all programmes to GMC standards, which cannot be guaranteed abroad. 

 

What do I need to do if I have a fitness to practise declaration on my application?

After allocation to Scotland, you are required to email the Scottish Foundation School on sfas@nes.scot.nhs.ukwith the details you have declared on your application.

 You are required to include all relevant information on your Supporting Trainees Entering Practice (STEP) form. 

 

Which hospitals in Scotland use paperless working?

Across the regions there is a mixed economy of electronic and paper systems with a varied mix of systems for patient notes, prescribing, admissions, ordering tests etc. No one area is all paper or all electronic.

Yes, you can download the rotational information for each region. Maps for each regions outline the locations.
