Academic Foundation Programmes
Scotland is one Academic Unit of Application (AUoA). Scotland offers fifty-one individual Programmes (also called rotations) across the four distinct areas of East, North, South East and West and linked to the Universities of Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Each of the Programmes starts with a generic clinical F1 year which allows for newly qualified doctors to gain experience in a range of clinical posts, with the F2 year focusing upon academic elements alongisde additional clinical experience.
These Programmes provide the opportunity for trainees to explore academia and, where applicable, the opportunity to work alongside senior academics and their research teams to develop an underatanding of clinical and basic scientific research. For some there will be the chance to increase their teaching experience in different settings. The Scottish Academic Foundation Programme offers the same clinical training as other Foundation Programme posts but includes additional tuition and assessment intended to prepare the post-holder for a future career in academia.
